Coyotepec reduction firing:
Sealing the kiln...
When the kiln is very hot, all the openings are sealed with wet clay cutting off oxygen to the fire. A stick, aglow on one end, is used to find any openings, which cause it to burst into a blowtorch-like flame due to the force of escaping gases. After many hours, when the kiln has cooled, the process is complete and the black pieces are removed.
