Coyotepec reduction firing:
The pots are fired for several hours...
After the pots are carefully arranged in the kiln, a layer of pottery shards is placed on top of the pots to serve as the kiln roof and to hold in the heat. A wood fire is built up inside the fire door at the base of the steps, and maintained for several hours until the heat reaches a peak and it is time to begin the reduction phase.
